Ready To Serve Scotland In A Changing Climate

Since Scottish Water was formed in 2002 we have significantly improved the water and wastewater service in Scotland. We are on course to deliver over £4bn of investment in thousands of quality and service improvement schemes across Scotland in our first eight years.

As a consequence of this investment, we saw a rise of between one and two per cent each year in our energy demand. However, our latest carbon footprint report (pdf) suggests a small reduction in energy demand in 2008/09.

The report calculates the carbon cost of Scottish Water’s day-to-day operational activities and shows a footprint of 475,265 tonnes of CO2 equivalents. The data used to calculate the footprint has been improving year on year, so whilst comparisons with previous years are extremely difficult and it is too early to identify a definite trend, like for like measures suggest a 9,000 tonnes reduction during 2008/09, largely due to our target-beating crackdown on leakage.

Scottish Water is committed to addressing rising emissions and to ensuring all parts of our business consider carbon and wider sustainability within decisions and actions.
