Mauricewood Primary have been involved in the project from the early stages. Back in November 2008, four pupils from P4 took part in the sod cutting ceremony to mark the official start on site of the project.

The whole class had their first visit to the construction site in June 2009 and since then the team at Glencorse have continued to work with pupils as they have progressed through the school. The class has learned all about Health and Safety in construction as well as the water treatment process and they are looking forward to their next visit. Scroll down to see photographs from their visit.

Water and The Environment

The focus of the third and final year of the Education Programme has been on the environmental aspects of water. During a classroom session, pupils learned about water pollution and simulated an oil tanker spill. It was amazing how quickly the oil spread within the water. Pupils used detergent and absorbent pads to clean up the oil spill.

As part of 2011 activities, P6 also received a visit from an ecologist and a landscape architect from a company called ERM who have worked on the new Glencorse Water Treatment Works (WTW) project. Building the new WTW in the countryside, Scottish Water had a responsibility to minimise the effects on the environment and provide new habitats where possible. One example of this is that the new WTW includes Scotland’s largest grass roof which will attract bees, butterflies and other insects.

After learning about the types of wildlife found in the area, pupils were asked to design their own gardens that would attract wildlife. The class produced some fantastic colourful gardens that would provide habitats for many types of animals. See below for winning entries from Tait, Sophie and Eirrin.

Photographs of Site Visit 2009

Below are some photographs from P4's first visit to the construction site. The class really enjoyed their visit and were amazed at the size of the pipes that will connect the new water treatment works to the existing network in Edinburgh! In the afternoon the class visited Pentland's Regional Park where they took part in more water related activites like stream tipping. One group even managed to find some fresh water shrimp! Photographs of Giant Tetrahedon Challenge

Below are some photographs of P7's giant tetrahedron challenge. The class were given wooden dowels and elastic bands and had to work together to create a giant pyramid structure. At four metres high, the tetrahedron was so big that it couldn't be built inside the school - it had to be completed in the playground!
