Pupils from Cornbank Primary had their first visit to the Glencorse WTW construction site in June 2009. When they came back a year later, pupils were amazed at the progress and how the site had changed from some muddy looking holes in the ground into structures beginning to resemble buildings.

In March 2011 the class made a third and final visit to a very different looking construction site. During the final visit, the class got to see Scotland’s largest green roof as well as the Glencorse hydro turbine that will generate power from the force of the water. Pupils also got to venture into the underground tank that will store 90 million litres of water.

Water and The Environment

The focus of the third and final year of the Education Programme has been on the environmental aspects of water. During a classroom session, pupils learned about water pollution and simulated an oil tanker spill. It was amazing how quickly the oil spread within the water. Pupils used detergent and absorbent pads to clean up the oil spill.

As part of 2011 activities, the class also received a visit from an ecologist and a landscape architect from a company called ERM who have worked on the new Glencorse Water Treatment Works (WTW) project. Building the new WTW in the countryside, Scottish Water had a responsibility to minimise the effects on the environment and provide new habitats where possible. One example of this is that the new WTW includes Scotland’s largest grass roof which will attract bees, butterflies and other insects.

After learning about the types of wildlife found in the area, pupils were asked to design their own gardens that would attract wildlife. The class produced some fantastic colourful gardens that would provide habitats for many types of animals. See below for winning entries from Katie, Marcus and Scott.

On their third and final visit to Glencorse WTW, pupils from Cornbank St. James Primary had the opportunity to plant an oak tree on the site. The class then went for a final tour of the site and then enjoyed some more outdoor activities at Pentland Hills Regional Park. Please click on the thumbnails to see enlarged images.
