Education & Events

The construction of a large civil engineering project brings tremendous opportunities to schools, colleges and Universities. During the life of the Glencorse Water Treatment Works Project, Scottish Water plans to maximise this opportunity to the benefit of local schools and students.

We are currently working with three primary schools in the Penicuik area - Cornbank, Glencorse and Mauricewood Primary. In the 08/09 session we have undertaken a number of activities such as classroom lessons, construction activities and site visits. The focus for this year has been Health & Safety in Construction. You can read more about the activities by clicking on the individual schools pages below.

We will continue our work with schools until the commissioning of the water treatment works in 2011. Over the next few years we will cover topics such as the water treatment process and environmental issues relating to water. Pupils will have the opportunity to come out to the site and see the progress each year until the completion of the treatment works.

Click below for more information on the work we are doing with schools.

Getting Involved

We would be delighted to hear from other local schools to learn how we can add to your planned curriculum, and work together on the largest single project being undertaken by Scottish Water. Please e:mail glencorse@scottishwater.co.uk or contact Lynsey Tweedlie, Scottish Water by calling 0845 601 8855, and quoting Edinburgh Drinking Water Project.

Fascinating Facts

The following facts and figures relate to the Glencorse Water Treatment Works:

175,000,000 litres of water will be treated every day - that's enough to fill 2 million baths every day OR enough water to fill 70 Olympic size swimming pools every day.

More than 3200 miles of reinforcing steel bar will be used - sufficient to stretch from Edinburgh to Montreal, Quebec OR commute between Glasgow and Edinburgh 75 times!

Over 18 kilometres of new pipelines will be installed to send the new treated water into Edinburgh, that is longer than one thousand eight hundred (1800) double decker buses line up in a row!!
