Education & Events

The construction of a large civil engineering project brings tremendous opportunities to schools, colleges and Universities. During the life of the Glencorse Water Treatment Works Project, Scottish Water has maximised this opportunity to the benefit of local schools and students.

During the three years of construction, the project team has worked with three primary schools in the Penicuik area - Cornbank, Glencorse and Mauricewood Primary and one in Edinburgh - Pentland Primary.

Furthermore, Penicuik High School, Heriot Watt University, University of Edinburgh and Abertay University have enjoyed visits to the Glencorse Project. From further a field Water Management students from Agricole Lycee in Tolouse, France visited the site in early 2010. See photographs of the students’ visits by clicking on the Higher Education link below.

The Education Programme began during the 2008/09 school session when the Glencorse construction was in it's infancy. The focus for the initial year was Health and Safety in construction. Pupils enjoyed a variety of classroom activities as well as their first visit to the Glencorse construction site.

In the 2009/10 session pupils from our four primary schools learned all about the process of water treatment; why it is important to clean the water and the stages that are involved. On their return visit to the construction site at Glencorse, pupils were amazed by the progress that had been achieved in a year.

The 2010/11 school term has given pupils the opportunity to learn about the environmental aspects of water – why it is important to conserve water and how we can reduce water pollution. Pupils also had their final visit to the almost complete Glencorse WTW where they took part in an oak tree planting event. Oak trees were kindly donated by MSP Robin Harper.

By working closely with Pentland Hills Regional Park we have been able to combine pupils visits to Glencorse with outdoor education sessions at the Pentland Hills Park.

Fascinating Facts

The following facts and figures relate to the Glencorse Water Treatment Works:

175,000,000 litres of water will be treated every day - that's enough to fill 2 million baths every day OR enough water to fill 70 Olympic size swimming pools every day.

More than 3200 miles of reinforcing steel bar will be used - sufficient to stretch from Edinburgh to Montreal, Quebec OR commute between Glasgow and Edinburgh 75 times!

Over 15 kilometres of new pipelines are being installed to send the new treated water into Edinburgh, that is longer than one thousand five hundred (1500) double decker buses line up in a row!!
