Backing the Borders
What we're doing
Among the wastewater projects throughout the Borders in summer 2008:
-
Investing nearly £700,000 at the Rawburn WTW will provide clearer, fresher drinking water to customers in the Berwickshire area, while also delivering environmental benefits. Wash water from the treatment process will no longer be discharged to the local burn. Work will begin this month.
-
The £1.1 million upgrade of the Newcastleton Wastewater Treatment Works, will provide a cleaner, fresher environment to around 1100 people in the Liddesdale village, and improve the quality of the Liddle Water. The investment, to be completed this summer, has seen the aeration tanks upgraded at the works.
-
At Kelso WwTW, investing nearly £300,000 will be completed this summer, allowing for the refurbishment of the screens and inlet works, as well as delivering a new Return Activated Sludge Pump and electrical control equipment. This will help to protect the natural environment for customers in Kelso and Ednam, while also improving the quality of the important salmon fishing waters of the River Tweed.
-
Work to upgrade the Galashiels sewage treatment works is entering its final design stages. This £1million investment will deliver environmental benefits to around 18,000 people in the Galashiels and Tweedbank area. New inlet screens will be installed, while there will be refurbishment and improvements to grit removal, the primary tank bridges and empty lagoon. This will help to protect the natural environment of the River Tweed.

Protecting your natural environment
Two of these significant projects (upgrade to Galashiels WwTW and Kelso WwTW) will help to safeguard the Borders lifeblood – the River Tweed. Investing in these wastewater treatment works keeps one of the world's best salmon rivers flowing
This summer’s projects mark the majority of our funding for the local environment. We have already outlined details of our £25 million investment to deliver clearer, fresher drinking water to around 80,000 customers throughout the region.
